Quotes from some of last year’s attendees, sponsors and volunteers:
I thoroughly enjoyed last year’s event, particularly when I observed young families meeting their neighbors and learning about the environment. If the committee organizes an event anywhere near as successful as last year, it will provide a day of enjoyment for me, my family and thousands of attendees.
Thomas M. Menino, Mayor of Boston
Holly and I attended the beach festival last summer. It was a lot of fun. It brought together two of the key reasons why we live here: the great access to the waterfront, beach and boating and the wonderful friends and neighbors that we have (and whom we don't get to see as often as we'd like). We look forward to it again this summer. Thanks to the team that is organizing it.

The Friends of Savin Hill Shores and the Beautification Committee of the Columbia Savin Hill Civic Association first annual Dorchester Beach Festival was a tremendous success for the organizers, their community, and their neighbors. Events such as these are important to draw attention to the wonderful natural resource we have so close to us – our Dorchester waterfront – and to bring together families, community organizations, and neighbors to enjoy and celebrate our shared treasure. The festival showcased the best of Dorchester and the commitment of its residents and organizations to civic engagement. I am pleased that the University of Massachusetts Boston could be part of what we hope is the first of many successful Dorchester Beach Festivals.
J. Keith Motley, Chancellor, UMass Boston
I knew we had a success when I realized that volunteers who had committed only a few hours, ended up staying and enjoying the whole day!
The day was a great blend of old and new neighbors! It was wonderful to see people out and about enjoying the natural shoreline as a community.
Deirdre Habershaw, Volunteer Coordinator
It was inspiring to see so many people come to celebrate one of Dorchester's great natural resources--its beaches! The great turnout is a testament to the selflessness and tremendous effort the volunteers, and the strength of Dorchester's neighborhoods.
Maureen Feeney, Boston City Councilor
I would love to see the beach festival come back again this year. It is a good time as everyone comes together to enjoy the day, have fun and meet and greet people from the neighborhood and other areas. There is a very friendly atmosphere with lots of people mingling and interacting. It is also a great time for families to spend quality time together, a rare occurrence these days. Also it shows kids there are other ways to have a great time with their peers. The festival is a reason to spend an afternoon and hopefully an evening along the beautiful boardwalk.
